2 Fat Guys

With a name like 2 Fat Guys, this restaurant sounded like it would do Food Country proud. This casual American eatery is located in Wellington Plaza, a small shopping center in Hockessin, Delaware (which also includes Okura, one of the better sushi places in the state). The interior is casual and unassuming, with a small, unpartitioned main dining room and an even smaller bar area in the back. A couple of flat screen TVs adorn the walls (showing The Simpsons and ESPN—nice).

The menu is limited to standard American pub fare, so there’s nothing too creative here. The “Award-Winning Wings” are available with a variety of sauces: mild, hot, nuclear, poached pear & molasses BBQ, garlic butter, ginger Thai, and bourbon BBQ. We ordered some hot wings, expecting standard buffalo wing sauce. The buffalo wings we got, however, were covered in what was more like a sweet, milder BBQ sauce. The waiter clarified that this was 2 Fat Guys’ standard buffalo wing sauce. The sauce wasn’t bad, but it was unexpected—and we wouldn’t be surprised if the same thing has happened to many other people. When you order hot wings, you expect buffalo wing sauce. If a restaurant wants to break with that tradition, fine—but a disclaimer on the menu would be nice. In any case, the waiter told us that if we wanted, we could order a “low carb” sauce made of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and butter. Done and done. These were what we were looking for: big, crispy, meaty wings that had enough hot sauce to keep them flavorful, without being a drippy mess (a common problem with buffalo wings). If you like buffalo wings, these are some of the best in the area.

Jeff’s Take:
For my entrĂ©e, I ordered the Kennett Burger, a half-pound sirloin beef patty smothered with local mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese. These days, fewer and fewer restaurants know how to properly cook medium-rare, but 2 Fat Guys did it right. The burger was slightly greasy, but held together well, thanks to the fixings: shredded lettuce, sliced pickle, tomato, and onion—all included in the pre-constructed burger without too much of any fixing. However, the French fries that came on the side were average at best: slightly soggy and undercooked.

Mike’s Take:
I was initially going to order the Black and Bleu Burger, but felt that one of us needed to try the unique “Elvis Burger,” a burger topped with bacon and peanut butter. I was skeptical when I ordered this unique combination, but have to say that the burger blew me away. The burger was cooked to perfection, the juices and fixings kept the burger moist, and the peanut butter added a whole lot of flair. In fact, the only thing I would change about the burger is to ask for extra peanut butter next time. French Fries were average, and we had a glitch with our appetizer, but in the end 2 Fat Guys delivered in the slaughter and meat category and that’s what really matters.
